With some PDF reader software, including the most popular Adobe Acrobat Reader, the default setting is to open PDF files in the browser when we click on a link to a PDF.

As a webmaster you can force the browser dialog box allowing to choose to open it directly or to save it..

As I already said earlier, PHP can not only make web pages. We can also generate images. First, let's see how to add a text on an image.

As it's a very long tutorial, which will be followed by other articles about images management in PHP, I divided it in two parts.

English version of the site

Pffff, I has worked hard (I need to congratulate myself!). I prepared an English language version of Azur Dev computer news & web tutorials.

I'm not sure azure.ironie.org is very anglophone, but as I'm locked on the ironie.org, azure is the translation of azur, and moreover the final e is like the e of English (but undoubtedly I am the only one to see it!).

The goal is to translate only the articles which can interest the rest of the world. Some news I publish are too French. I hope that this translation will attract more visitors than the French site. Answer in a few weeks...

Wordpress 2.6 : patch for files storage

Yesterday I update my blog from Wordpress 2.5 to 2.6. There are not as much changes than between 2.3 and 2.5, just some small upgrade and especially a engine optimization.

Indeed, it seems faster to me, but it may be a psychological effect!

Just after this update, I had a bad surprise when posting the article about EeeBox. The images doesn't work, because it searched them in the default directory (/wp-content/uploads/) instead of reading my value to store files (/files/).

Switch from RSS to Atom feeds

What we generally call RSS feeds can be in fact feeds from different formats: RSS 1 (or 0.9), RSS 2 or Atom.

The last one has an advantage (very important for a real geek) on the RSS format: it's not proprietary and supported by the W3C. Moreover it brings additional elements for more content.

That's why I decide to put the link on the Atom feed on my blog. Here is how to do:

There are 2 ways of showing on your website news coming from other sites RSS feeds in PHP.

• The first is to open the feed like any other file and use PHP functions on strings to build your own parser.

The disadvantage is that this method is not "portable": depending on the RSS feed version (1, 2, Atom) there are diffrent syntaxes and the code working for a feed, won't work for another.

• The second is to use an existing library, where these problem were already solved by others..

Good coding presentation

The code presentation in any language is a very important point to increase comprehension and "visual" resarch. At the moment and when we re-read a few weeks, or months later, a good presentation can make the diffrence between a fast developper and a laming one.

Create an intelligent search engine

When we build a website containing many pages based on the same template (blog, shop, forum, directory...) we always need a search-engine to extract results from the database.

Here things are getting harder, because by searching "videos" we won't find articles with the word "video" whereas it would be needed..

Fortunately, there is a solution: use a soundex. It's an algorithm which will compared words based on phonetics of the words, so the results will be close in sound to the searched term.

Dynamic Javascript or CSS in PHP

We often think PHP can only create HTML web pages, but it's of course possible to create all sorts of textual contents: Javascript files, CSS or XML (including RSS feed) but also images or PDF files.
